Eversheds Sutherland (International) has hired Andrew Cheung as general counsel, replacing Simon Crossley who is retiring from the partnership in April.

Cheung joins from Pinsent Masons, where he was also GC. At Eversheds he will oversee the GC’s office, advising on legal risks, compliance and governance. He was previously a commercial litigator and is dual qualified in England and Wales and Australia.

Helen Thomas, managing partner – clients and business delivery at Eversheds, said: “[Cheung’s] extensive experience makes him an outstanding appointment for the general counsel role. The role of GC at Eversheds Sutherland continues to grow in importance and I’m looking forward to working closely with him in support of our long‑term ambitions.”

Cheung arrives after just over three years at Pinsent Masons, having previously spent more than 15 years at Dentons, roughly 13 of them as partner and GC for the UK and Middle East. Prior to that he practised at Freshfields and Maxim Litigation Consultants.

He said: “I’m delighted to be joining Eversheds Sutherland at such a strategically important time and I look forward to bringing my experience to support the firm’s ongoing priorities.”

Crossley, meanwhile, is set to leave the partnership at the end of April after two decades with the firm. He joined as a partner in 2005 and has held several leadership roles during that time, including as global head of IP, global head of life sciences and co-global head of commercial. He became GC and chief governance officer in 2023, replacing Debbie Jukes.

Thomas added: “Simon’s contribution to the firm over the past 20 years has been exceptional and I want to thank him and wish him every success for the future.”

Last October, employment law specialist Littler hired Maralee (Marti) Downey as its first chief legal officer and GC. She joined from retirement home operator Brookdale Senior Living, where she was legal VP for labour and employment.

And last June, IP specialist Fish & Richardson promoted its chief legal risk officer Elham Dehbozorgi to the GC role, replacing Roger Feldman who was due to retire at the end of last year. Dehbozorgi joined Fish & Richardson in 2024, having previously spent nine years at Sterne Kessler Goldstein & Fox, latterly as GC.
