At Freshfields, he will focus on the representation of public companies, financial institutions, board members and senior executives in connection with internal and regulatory investigations and related civil litigation. Mr Wible joins the firm after a distinguished career in public service. In the Office of the White House Counsel, he advised senior White House and other executive branch officials on responses to congressional investigations and counseled senior administration officials on risk management and litigation. He was part of the leadership team that implemented President Obama’s historic Clemency Initiative, which resulted in the President’s commuting the sentences of more than 1,700 non-violent drug offenders sentenced under outdated laws.

White House experience

Before moving to the White House, he served as Assistant Deputy Chief of the Fraud Section of the US Department of Justice where he investigated and prosecuted a wide range of white-collar offenses and supervised a team of attorneys in the investigation and prosecution of complex financial fraud. Among the high-priority cases with significant international aspects were the LIBOR trial of two traders at a global financial institution, the guilty plea of a senior trader in a LIBOR case involving another global financial institution, and the prosecution of futures trader Navinder Sarao in the second ever criminal spoofing case. In these and other cases, he worked closely with the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, and other law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

Former Assistant US States Attorney

Having previously served for eight years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Mr Wible is the sixth alumnus of that office to join Freshfields. ‘We’re delighted to have landed Brent at Freshfields, following a sterling career as a federal prosecutor and in the White House. He has a brilliant track record of success in handling the most difficult issues in the most important cases while in government. His experience investigating and litigating a broad range of regulatory enforcement matters and as a counselor to the President on some of the most challenging and controversial issues facing the country will be invaluable to our clients in their most difficult battles. He will add to Freshfields’ leading position as the firm of choice for complex global investigations,’ said Aaron Marcu, head of the firm’s US litigation practice.
