Out of the 1,930 applications to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, Mr Carton notes that several are clearly law-related. Some of the more obvious applications include .law (requested by five applicants); .lawyer (requested by two applicants); .legal (requested by two applicants); .llp (requested by four applicants) and .llc (requested by nine applicants).
Mr Carton also points out that despite the application for law-related suffixes, no firm took the plunge and requested their own branded name (for example, .skadden or .cliffordchance).
‘There were the obligatory applications for .sex and .porn,’ notes Mr Carton. ‘And of course a request for .sucks so that everyone in the world will need to protect their name from being “.suck-squatted.”’
