Insurance broker Howden has appointed Christopher Dalrymple as group chief legal officer, taking over the top lawyer role from group general counsel Joanne Jolly who is remaining on at the company in a senior legal leadership role.
Dalrymple joins from insurance and reinsurance business Alleghany Corporation, where he was GC. At Howden, he will bring more than 25 years of legal leadership experience across the insurance and financial services sectors, helping support the company’s growth plans.
During his time at Alleghany, Dalrymple led the global legal team and supported the board and CEO on strategic matters and public company governance issues. He will take up his new role on 23 March.
London-headquartered Howden is a global insurance brokerage operating across 57 countries.
David Shalders, group chief operating officer at Howden, said: “Howden’s ability to attract the very best talent is what sets us apart. Finding a trusted adviser to guide and grow our business as we deliver our ambitious plans is critical.
“After a long and careful search, I am delighted that in Chris we have found an incredibly well-respected legal leader with sharp commercial acumen, deep insurance and reinsurance experience and a proven track record of leading through transformation and growth, including taking companies public.”
Dalrymple arrives after 24 years at Alleghany in New York, overseeing its transition from a public company to its acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway in 2022. Prior to that he worked at legacy firm Dewey Ballantine, also in New York.
He said: “After an enjoyable and rewarding 24 years at Alleghany, the opportunity to join Howden for the next ambitious chapter of its growth is truly exciting. The strength and depth of Howden’s talent is impressive, and I am eager to now be a part of it. Howden has a special culture, energy and client focus that I look forward to supporting as part of the experienced and talented legal team already in place.”
Jolly has been group GC since October 2024, having previously been GC at Lloyds Banking Group for its insurance, pensions and investments business, among other roles. She was also previously group GC at RSM Tenon Group and GC at Aviva Group Centre.
In other recent finance moves, earlier this month Goldman Sachs’ CLO Kathy Ruemmler said she was resigning from the bank amid scrutiny over her ties with Jeffrey Epstein.
