Professional bodies might start requiring would-be lawyers to be competent in the prevailing technologies, according to a lead speaker at the Australian College of Law Specialist Legal Conference.

Michael Williams, an IP partner at Gilbert + Tobin, told Lawyers Weekly: 'We’re going to see a trend where technology is no longer an option.' Looking at the issues for lawyers in practice in future, he said that professional bodies could require the use of certain technologies. He explained: 'When you start having professional standards requiring technology to be a part of practice, and people can’t just opt out of that, you’re reaching a point where there will be automatic adoption.'

He went on to say: 'It might be a requirement of holding a practising certificate that you have a minimum ability within your firm or your practice to engage with the prevailing technology, and it’s not just market-driven, it’s standards driven.' Source: Lawyers Weekly
