Discussing the recruitiment of Mark Crean, former deputy senior partner at Herbert Smith Freehills, the head of the Jones Day office in Sydney, Tim L'Estrange, described his new colleague as a 'likeable, nice and respected person'. Mr L'Estrange also explained that the practice tries to avoid hiring people who are disruptive even if their financial performance is strong. Jones Day has 2,400 lawyers spread around 41 offices in the world.

How, not just what

Talking to Lawyers Weekly, Mr L'Estrange added: 'It’s not only what you achieve, it’s how you achieve it. We joke about people with sharp elbows; they are not necessarily the people we want here.'
