Top 15 US firm Jones Day has promoted 37 lawyers to partner in its latest round, a step down on the 51 and 45 who made the grade in the last two years.
Women made up 15 of the promotions, or 41% of the overall cohort, in between the 31% and 49% in 2023 and 2022 respectively.
Like last year US promotions dominated, with 28 of the cohort working across the firm’s domestic network and the remainder spread across Europe and Latin America. The lawyers will assume their new roles 1 January 2025.
The firm’s business and tort litigation practice saw the most promotions, with eight, followed by its corporate and financial markets practices (seven each), government regulation (four), and issues and appeals, labour and employment, real estate, and healthcare and life sciences (two each).
The final three promotions went to lawyers in Jones Day’s IP, global disputes, and securities litigation and SEC enforcement practices.
Meantime the firm’s Cleveland headquarters saw the most promotions by location, with five, while there were four apiece in Washington DC and Chicago.
There were also three promotions in Dallas and New York, and two each in Detroit, Columbus and Atlanta. The three remaining US promotions were split between Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami.
London led the overseas promotions, with three, including corporate duo Matthew Barrett and Mathis Bredimus and Karl Moussalli, who got the nod in the global disputes team.
The Europe promotions were rounded out with two in Paris and one each in Brussels, Frankfurt and Milan. The final promotion was in Mexico City, where Arturo de la Parra moved up in the financial markets practice.
Firm managing partner Gregory Schumaker commented: “This class of new partners once again reflects Jones Day’s ability to provide our valued clients the guidance and legal solutions for their most complex business challenges across the globe.”
Schumaker took over as managing partner of the 2,400-lawyer firm at the start of last year from Stephen Brogan, who had led Jones Day for 20 years. The famously conservative firm places an unusual amount of authority in its leader and maintains its tradition of allowing its incumbent managing partner to choose their successor.
Jones Day, placed 12th on The American Lawyer’s 2024 Am Law 200 ranking after bringing in revenue of £2.7bn in 2023, has also been active in the lateral hiring market this year.
Standout hires included partners Rodney Moore, Samuel Peca and Scott Delaney, who the firm brought on in Dallas from Winston & Strawn to boost its M&A, private equity and energy and infrastructure offerings.
Over the course of the year the firm also boosted its Australia ranks with the hire of tax partner John Walker and banking and finance partner Alastair Gourlay in Sydney from Baker McKenzie, as well as its disputes coverage in Europe with the hire of Pablo Doñate in Madrid from Andersen and Yuri Wehrmeijer in Amsterdam from Eversheds Sutherland.
The firm also added a government regulation team in Paris from White & Case in April led by partner François-Guilhem Vaissier, having recruited a trio of government regulation lawyers in the French capital the previous October from Norton Rose Fulbright.
