Law firm head says legal sector is running scared

Moves by law firms to shrink are misguided and signs that the legal industry is in a 'funk', according to the head of Big Six Australian practice Minter Ellison.

In an interview with Lawyers Weekly, Minters chief executive Tony Harrington said: 'The legal profession has got itself into a bit of a funk believing that it can’t grow … and some of the larger firms believe success is about shrinking the firm to greatness; I don't agree with that'. If these changes are being made in order to remain profitable, Mr Harrington thinks that is a misguided strategy which neglects the developing needs of clients.

He added: 'If you're not growing, you're dying.' Minter Ellison is trying a range of measures to help its partnership model stay vibrant.
