Lawyer numbers shrink in England

The number of practising and non-practising lawyers has dropped in England and Wales, for the first time in over 20 years, according to the Law Society.

As of the end of July there were 158,644 solicitors enrolled - a fall of 4.4% on 12 months before. Of these, 127,676 were practising - a fall of 0.85% on the year. By contrast, the numbers of solicitors going in-house is on the rise. Over 20% now work in industry, up from 14.3% in 2003. Source: Legal Business
