Litigation staff laid off in Australia

While litigation appears to be booming globally, one Australian firm, Piper Alderman, has laid off four lawyers from its team in Adelaide.

Three senior associates and one junior lawyer were made redundant in the group. A paralegal and two support staff members are also leaving. But the fall in work seems to reflect local, rather than national or international, conditions. Tony Britten-Jones, managing partner in Adelaide, said: 'This was a difficult decision, but reflects a downturn in dispute resolution work in Adelaide in the last nine months.' He added that the litigation team will be looking to offer more alternative fee arrangements in future as a way of making its proposition more attractive to clients.
