Legal intelligence start-up Theo Ai has appointed former Bristol Myers Squibb general counsel Sandra Leung to its board of directors.

Leung steps up to the role having been part of the firm’s GC advisory board since its inception in November last year.

In her new role, she will be responsible for helping to form the company’s understanding of responsible AI delivery, alongside corporate governance and how enterprise legal teams assess litigation risk.

The firm says it will benefit from Leung’s vast experience as it continues to scale its business and points to her “deep knowledge of pharmaceutical litigation” and her implementation of “feedback around our specific product offering for Fortune 500 pharmaceutical companies”.

Leung said: “What impressed me most about Theo Ai is its ability to help legal teams separate the signal from the noise, especially in complex matters involving voluminous medical records.

“Having led legal teams through high-stakes enterprise risk, I see tremendous potential for Theo Ai to help teams review information more thoroughly, develop strategy faster and make better-informed decisions.”

Patrick Ip, co-founder and CEO of Theo Ai, commented that Leung has led a legal team at one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world “managing litigation risk at a scale few executives ever reach”.

He added: “She will help ensure our AI is not only powerful, but practical, responsible and grounded in the litigation challenges and enterprise risks Fortune 500 companies manage every day.”

Leung spent almost 33 years at Bristol Myers Squibb, more than a decade of them as GC, before departing the company in May last year.

At Theo AI, she joins a five-person board, with Ip and co-founder and CTO Tiago Luchini alongside two of the company's investors: Porntepp Ungvichian, of Run Ventures, and Aaron Samuels, of Collide Capital.

She is also currently an independent board member at Quebec-based pharmaceutical manufacturer Bausch Health Companies, as well as at the Asian American Legal Defence and Education Fund, and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association.

Theo Ai also recently strengthened its executive team by hiring Pamela Fehring as its head of product marketing, where she will focus on linking its litigation intelligence capacity to the strategic and governance needs of enterprise legal teams.

She joins the firm after 12 years at US Bank, most recently as chief AI counsel.

California-based Theo Ai uses AI to predict case outcomes and estimate settlement values. It was founded two years ago by Ip, Luchini and Alex Alben.

Ip was previously the founder of technology venture start-up firm PSI Group and Luchini previously co-founded biotechnology research company Deep Origin. Albern is the former co-founder of consultancy Get Smart Cyber Defense.

In November last year, Theo Ai announced a funding round of $6.8m led by early-stage technology investor Run Ventures, bringing its total funding to $10m following a seed round in May 2025.

Last week, Arnold & Porter announced the appointment of its first chief AI officer, Roger Maede, to develop, evaluate and implement AI-powered tools to support client work.
