The proposal has been made by German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, as a way of making it less likely that the American authorities can intercept communications in the EU. But the IT companies are privately asking whether such a move is feasible. And Eduardo Ustaran, a data privacy lawyer who has advised various big IT players, says: 'Digital protectionism is both unwise and unworkable. Trying to prevent unjustified surveillance by curtailing global communications is old politics at play.' Source: FInancial Times
