Law Society of Ireland past president Moya Quinlan, who was buried today after passing away peacefully at the age of 98, was an elected Law Society council member for some 40 years, right up into her 90s.

Long-serving

Ms Quinlan had retired from her role as a chair of the Employment Appeals Tribunal only a few years earlier, and served as the first woman president in 1980/81. Ms Quinlan qualified as a solicitor in 1946. After her tenure as president it took over two decades before a woman was elected president of the Law Society again. She was a key figure in the Society’s acquisition of the current Blackhall Place premises from the King’s Hospital School in the late 1960s and its subsequent development.

Sadly missed

Her son Michael Quinlan was Law Society president last year. Current Law Society president Patrick Dorgan said, ‘Moya was truly a remarkable person who will be deeply and sadly missed throughout the profession, and wider society. Our thoughts are with her sons, Michael and Brendan, and all of Moya’s family.’
