Simon Tysoe – a mainstay of Latham’s London energy practice for many years – has left the firm for Gibson Dunn.

Tysoe has joined as a partner in Gibson Dunn’s M&A group after a decade at his former firm. An energy specialist with expertise across oil and gas and related infrastructure, he brings more than 20 years of experience advising on complex cross-border transactions.

At Latham, Tysoe recently worked with clients such as Denham Capital Management, INEOS Energy, Chandra Asri, KKR, RWE and Carlyle. Prior to joining Latham he practised at legacy Herbert Smith Freehills, where he made partner in 2010 after a decade with the firm.

Rob Carr, co-partner in charge of Gibson Dunn’s London office, said Tysoe was “a highly respected figure in the global energy M&A space, and his deep industry knowledge makes him an exceptional addition to our team as we advance our capabilities across the energy and infrastructure markets”.

“Simon’s arrival marks a significant step in the continued growth of our global practice,” said Federico Fruhbeck, who co-leads the firm’s projects and infrastructure practice group.

“His experience advising both strategic investors and financial sponsors on transformative transactions, combined with his relationships across multiple jurisdictions, will be invaluable to our clients,” he added.

Tysoe’s hire follows Gibson Dunn recruiting Ben Shorten and Trinh Chubbock from legacy Shearman & Sterling in London in 2023 to meet growing client demand in energy transition, renewables and private capital transactions and expand its dealmaking capabilities.

Going the other way Anna Howell, the former co-lead of the firm’s oil and gas practice, joined Orrick in London in September alongside Mitasha Chandok, just a week after Orrick added four finance partners in London from Cadwalader.

Tysoe’s practice is broadly based around investment-led cross-border M&A, joint ventures and project development throughout the energy value chain, as well as broader infrastructure transactions.

He has led significant deals across Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. That breadth of client exposure dovetails well with Gibson Dunn’s US axis and EMEA expansion, something Tysoe himself acknowledged.

Tysoe pointed to Gibson Dunn’s momentum in the energy and infrastructure space, both in the US and UK as well as EMEA, adding he looked forward to working with Shorten, Lubbock and colleagues to service his new firm’s clients. Shorten, writing on LinkedIn, said Tysoe “brings tremendous experience across the energy and natural resources space, and is a thoroughly nice guy”.

The news follows Gibson Dunn’s hire of leading arbitration barrister Chris Harris KC, who joined the firm in London before moving to Switzerland to found its new Zurich office earlier this year.
