Simmons & Simmons has welcomed eight students to take part in its inaugural AI law internship programme.
The intensive programme started on 13 April (Monday) and will run until 24 April. Students will be given firsthand experience of tech-focused and legal AI roles, working alongside the law firm’s leading global AI experts on pioneering projects that are shaping the future of AI law and governance.
The internship will also focus on AI enablement and transformation within legal services.
The selected students are either in their penultimate or final year as an undergraduate, with postgraduate students and graduates also selected.
Simmons & Simmons said interest in the programme was exceptionally high, with the firm receiving more than 400 applications.
The selection process comprised of written applications and a blended assessment which included situational judgement, applied intellect and video interview questions.
Simmons & Simmons said opportunities for a future role at the firm will be open for stand-out performers on the course.
Peter Lee, partner and AI governance lead, said: “As AI reshapes how legal services are delivered, it is vital that future lawyers and technologists understand both the opportunities and the risks. This internship gives students direct exposure to real AI matters and practical skills that will be central to their careers.”
Minesh Tanna, a partner and global AI lead, said that AI is “transforming” the legal profession, and that the firm wants to see students appreciating the breadth of potential careers at the intersection of law and technology.
He added: “Through our unique internship, students will experience how we advise on complex AI issues and deploy AI tools within the firm, helping to build the next generation of legal professionals.”
Other firms that have been pushing ahead with AI initiatives include Eversheds Sutherland, which in February launched an ‘AI-centric’ innovation department in the US. The 20-person department is led by senior director Katrina Dittmer and will advise on AI use across the firm.
Meanwhile in December, Ropes & Gray appointed ex-Meta executive Gretchen Greene as chief of AI strategy, while Farrer & Co hired Oliver Jeffcott as head of innovation and AI from Macfarlanes.
