The ASA has ordered the University to scrap a series of advertisements that include ‘misleading’ claims about the salaries of early-career lawyers. In a decision published today, the ASA ruled that a UoL ad that claims that law graduates can make an average of ‘£54,000 a year’ in their first five years of practice is unsubstantiated and must not appear again in its current form. The standards watchdog also took issue with UoL branding itself as ‘the UK’s leading law school’ in the advertisements. It ruled: ‘Because we had not seen evidence which supported the likely consumer interpretation of the claim… we concluded the claim was misleading.’ UoL argued that the claim was based on the University having enrolled more students in its ‘full-time postgraduate courses’ than other competitors.
