Health tech business Hello Heart has hired David Wood as general counsel, succeeding Dwight Moxie in the role.
Wood joins from online physical therapy company Hinge Health, where he was also GC. He brings more than two decades of legal and regulatory experience to his new role, almost half of them in-house working for high-growth digital health companies.
Menlo Park-based Hello Heart develops technology to help people monitor and manage their cardiovascular health. The company was founded in 2013 and has raised more than $138m from venture capital firms including Khosla Ventures, IVP and Stripes.
Maayan Cohen, CEO and co-founder of Hello Heart, said: “David brings a wealth of digital health expertise, operational rigour and a strong understanding of the regulatory landscape that governs our industry.
“He played a critical role in scaling Hinge Health through rapid growth and IPO, and his experience in managing AI legal frameworks, data privacy and compliance is invaluable as we work to make preventive heart health tools accessible to every American.”
Wood arrives after six years at Hinge Health, initially joining as vice president for legal before being made GC in August 2024. Prior to that, he was GC at healthcare start-up Amino – his first in-house role. He previously spent 12 years at Perkins Coie where he was a partner in Palo Alto working with start-ups. He started his legal career at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe.
He said: “I was drawn to Hello Heart’s mission and the opportunity to help address cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death, through a platform that truly improves outcomes, expands access and reduces healthcare costs. I look forward to working with Hello Heart’s team to make a meaningful impact on a nationwide scale.”
Wood’s arrival at Hello Heart comes amid a surge of in-house appointments at healthcare-related businesses in recent weeks. Last month, a trio of US biotech companies installed new legal heads. Sudo Biosciences hired Paul Bavier as its first chief legal officer from HilleVax, PepGen hired Joseph Vittiglio as chief business and legal officer after a year consulting for the business, and Tonix Pharmaceuticals hired Irina Ishak as GC from New Jersey law firm Lowenstein Sandler.
