US lawyers work to avoid 9/11 moment on cyber attacks

A team of lawyers and investigators is working to prevent the equivalent of a 9/11 attack on the internet, according to the top cyber security official at the Department of Justice.

The US government is asking companies to collaborate on information over cyberattacks bluebay

Speaking at a security conference, John Carlin asked the private sector to collaborate by sharing information of attacks they suffered. The US is facing a 'pre-9/11 moment' in a race to head off cyber terrorists before they attack. Lawyers have been called into the battle in order to track down these hackers and to restrict their movement and capabilities.

Cut access to finance

Mr Carlin, assistant Attorney General for national security, said: 'A group of investigators and lawyers are looking to what the threat is and using the legally available tools to . . . increase the cost [of attacks to hackers. There are some criminal groups who if you can identify them and cut off their access to US financial groups, it makes it a lot harder to do the bad acts.'

Critical infrastructure

Mr Carlin is eager to collaborate with the private sector because 'so much of the critical infrastructure in this space is in private hands'. Law firms are under increasing pressure to co-operate and to share information on attacks launched on them. Source: Financial Times
