Soon after he was appointed, Mr Mueller said: 'Under my leadership, Volkswagen will do everything it can to develop and implement the most stringent compliance and governance standards in our industry.' He was appointed after the company confessed to fixing emissions equipment on at least 11 million cars.

Other scandals

Some investors had been calling for a strengthening of the corporate governance system prior to this scandal because of 'a series of scandals at the group', according to the Financial Times.
