Lawyer sues city which fired him after five years in legal team

Markus Buchart, 52, is seeking unspecified special, aggravated and punitive damages and costs from the city of Winnipeg after he was sacked from the legal department a few days before Christmas.

He says that his dismissal was without cause and was carried out in a way that was 'malicious, high-handed and unfair and constituted bad faith'. In documents that were filed to the court, Mr Buchart and his team say that he is due to compensation equivalent to his annual salary of C$96,000, five weeks holiday and continuing provision of benefits for an unstated period.

Significant mental distress

The filed documents also say that 'the timing and manner in which the dismissal was carried out, (Buchart) has suffered significant mental distress and aggravation and therefore claims entitlement to aggravated damages'. Source: Winnipeg Free Press
