'Our firms are stronger in Europe', say law firm leaders

The day that will decide Britain's fate either in or out of the European Union has finally arrived - and lawyers are urging the public to stick to the status quo.

In a letter penned to and published by The Times newspaper on Brexit Eve yesterday, a coalition of ten prominent law firm leaders, together with other big business figureheads, called on the British public to reject Brexit and keep Britain safely inside the European Union. ‘Our reasons are straightforward: businesses and their employees benefit massively from being able to trade inside the world’s largest single market without barriers,’ read the letter, adding that a vote to leave the EU would result in ‘uncertainty for firms, less trade with Europe and fewer jobs’ in Britain’s economic future. The letter carries 1,280 signatures, 51 of which come from directors of FTSE 100 companies. Signatories from major law firms were:

Fieldfisher managing partner Michael Chissick

Simmons & Simmons senior partner Colin Passmore; and managing partner Jeremy Hoyland

Watson Farley & Williams managing partner Chris Lowe

Weightmans managing partner John Schorah

Linklaters senior partner Robert Elliot

Addleshaw Godard managing partner John Joyce; and senior partner Charles Penney

Travers Smith senior partner Chris Hale

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner John Davies
