Julie Brill has joined Microsoft as deputy general counsel for privacy and regulatory affairs. Her new role will include regulatory work on telecommunations, corporate standards, internet governance, as well as legal and regulatory issues around accessibility of Microsoft products. She will also be responsible for key aspects of the company’s online safety work. Ms Brill will report directly to Microsoft president and chief legal officer Brad Smith. She was nominated to the Federal Trade Commission as a commissioner by President Obama.
Helen Grantham will replace Co-operative Group general counsel Alistair Asher as the bank's general counsel. Ms Grantham, who joined the Co-op as interim group secretary in January 2016, qualified as a solicitor in 1989 and for the last 20 years has practised as both a general counsel and company secretary for listed companies working at board level, most recently for Dixons Carphone.
Alistair Asher becomes director of special projects for the business.He joined the Co-operative Group in 2013 from Allen & Overy where he was a senior partner and global head of the financial institutions group. He was appointed as a director of the Co-operative Bank in September 2016.
EE general counsel James Blendis is set to leave the company. His team at EE will be integrated into BT's consumer group, headed up by general counsel Russell Johnstone.
Burlington Stores general counsel Janet Dhillon has been nominated by President Donald Trump for the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Ms Dhillon is a veteran corporate in-house lawyer who led the legal departments at US Airways and J.C. Penney. She now runs the 10 strong legal team at Burlington Stores team. She would serve a five-year term if confirmed. Mr Trump also has not yet nominated a replacement for the general counsel position, vacated by David Lopez last year.
