Private insurance brokerage Lockton has appointed Sara Romine as its next chief legal officer, replacing Trey Humphrey in the role.

Romine is currently the company’s US general counsel and deputy CLO, where she has also helped lead Lockton’s litigation strategy. As CLO, she will be responsible for its global legal function and overseeing risk and compliance. She will take up her new position on 1 November.

Kansas City, Missouri-based Lockton provides insurance brokerage services for businesses.

Ron Lockton, chairman and CEO of Lockton, said: “Sara has earned the trust of leaders across our business through her judgement, expertise and ability to work collaboratively. She is widely recognised as a top performer, and I have tremendous confidence in Sara and our legal team as we continue to grow and strengthen Lockton around the world.”

Romine joined Lockton in 2022 from AT&T, initially arriving as US GC and then adding the deputy CLO role in June last year. At AT&T she spent three years as associate vice president for legal – her first in-house role.

She previously worked in private practice at Carrington Coleman in Dallas, latterly as a partner. She started her legal career clerking in the US District Court for the Northern District of Florida and then the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

She said: “As Lockton continues to grow, the legal function has an increasingly important role to play in helping the business navigate complexity, seize opportunities and support clients around the world.

“Together, the team and I will build on the strong legal foundation that has been established and continue to provide the strategic counsel necessary to protect and accelerate Lockton’s vision for the future.”

Humphrey, meanwhile, is stepping down after more than a quarter of a century in the role.

He said: “I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with Sara and have seen firsthand the judgement, integrity and perspective she brings to the role. After 26 years at Lockton, it means a great deal to know the legal function will be led by someone who understands our business and our culture. I couldn’t be more pleased to see Sara take it forward.”

In other in-house insurance moves, back in August Vantage Group Holdings hired Lucy Fato as GC from Seaport Entertainment Group, while in May, US insurance company Hadron hired Liesel Carvajal as group GC from AXA XL.
