According to Walcha News Online, Sullivan – who has worked for the law firms Freehills, Gadens and Mallesons – gave evidence stating he had absolutely no recollection of taking the paintings, despite being caught on CCTV.
Sullivan’s lawyer, Tony Bellanto QC told Judge Jennifer English: ‘This is a somewhat bizarre case,’ before suggesting his client may have suffered a bout of ‘dissociative amnesia’. The court also heard that Sullivan suffered from depression.
Perhaps the most straight-forward aspect of the case was the stance of Crown prosecutor James Gibson, who told the court there was another option – that Sullivan knew what had happened, had lied to the police and was now being untruthful in court. Sullivan will be sentenced in August.
