The study, conducted by ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods principal fellow Ben Phillips, concluded that men out-earn women in all but 14 professions in Australia—with barristers boasting the biggest gap of all. While the average male barrister declares an annual taxable income of $169,000, their female counterparts pull in just $60,000 per year, the study found. Though there was a discrepancy in hours (male barristers reported a 44-hour week, while women reported 37 hours), accommodating the discrepancy brings the pay gap down to a still considerable 141 per cent. New South Wales Bar Association director Phillip Selth OAM expressed surprise at the data, as it does not tally with research conducted by the bar that placed the gross earnings gap between male and female barristers at 39 per cent in 2014.
