Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) has announced its data privacy and cyber security team has launched CCPA-Info.com. The site is branded as a comprehensive, no-nonsense resource to help businesses and legal teams interpret, navigate and comply with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which takes effect Jan. 1, 2020.

Burdensome

The CCPA purports to enhance privacy rights for residents of California, but BCLP says it imposes significant compliance burdens, steep penalties and litigation risks on companies that do business in California. “While the CCPA was intended as California’s answer to the European GDPR, the CCPA lacks the years of negotiation and decades of interpretative guidance that existed in Europe. The law has been criticized for its hasty drafting, ambiguous language and lack of interpretative guidance,” said David Zetoony, BCLP partner and data privacy team leader. “CCPA-Info.com is designed to be the one-stop, go-to resource to read the CCPA, find business-practical guidance for each of its provisions, track upcoming regulations, track legislative proposals and track litigation as it is filed. The site contains hundreds of pages of guidance for businesses. With new content being added daily it is without a doubt the most in-depth resource available.”

Business approach

“We take a very business-practical approach to the CCPA” said Christian Auty, BCLP counsel. “This site breaks down the trickier AdTech-related aspects of the law such as, for example, the standard practice of using cookies to track customer preferences.” The site will be a dynamic resource with consistent updates, interpretations and guidance being added regularly.
