Canadian in-house lawyers send work to India

A Canadian outsourcing company has revealed that in-house legal departments have increased their use of outsourcing, matching the trend in traditional law firms.

Outsourcing a popular option in Canada

The Star reports that in-house lawyers, like their law firm colleagues, are outsourcing high volume, repetitive work to lawyers in countries like India and the Philippines.
According to the report, contract reviews, drafting standard documents, and summarizing electronic discovery transcripts are all fair game for outsourcing abroad.

Quality work

Gavin Birer, the owner of Legalwise which provides outsourced legal services, told The Star: ‘I was surprised to learn that these less expensive offshore lawyers were doing quality work and turning it around quickly and efficiently.’
Legalwise now employs 35 full-time lawyers in Bangalore and additional lawyers are hired on contract depending on client needs.

Meanwhile, leading global provider of legal process outsourcing (LPO) Exigent has confirmed it is to open a centre in Canada.
