Digital infrastructure provider US Signal has hired Nate Steed as general counsel and chief legal officer, a newly created position.

Steed joins from Michigan-based law firm Warner Norcross & Judd, where he was an associate. There he built a national practice focused on software licensing, tech transactions, data security and contracting.

At US Signal, he will oversee all legal strategy and corporate governance matters, as well as contracting, privacy and cybersecurity issues, regulatory compliance, IP, enterprise risk management and legal operations.

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based US Signal provides cloud, co-location, data centre and fibre network services.

The company also hired Jock Thompson as chief of artificial intelligence, who will work closely with Steed as the company seeks to accelerate AI-driven innovation while strengthening legal, regulatory and ethical guardrails.

Daniel Watts, US Signal’s CEO, said: “These appointments represent the next chapter of our growth. We are investing in leadership that allows us to move faster, innovate responsibly and deliver secure, intelligent infrastructure solutions to the enterprises and partners we serve.”

Steed spent almost 18 years at Warner Nocross & Judd, where he started his legal career.

He said: “I’m excited to join US Signal at a pivotal moment in the evolution of cloud and AI infrastructure. Organisations are seeking trusted partners who understand both technology complexity and regulatory accountability. US Signal is uniquely positioned to deliver both.”

In other IT services-related in-house moves, earlier this month, US data centre business Synteq Digital hired Will Wang as its first GC from Goodwin Procter to help accelerate the company’s M&A efforts.

Meanwhile back in January, US AI business ServiceNow hired former Microsoft legal chief Hossein Nowbar as CLO, replacing GC Russ Elmer.

Last July, US quantum computing and networking business IonQ hired Paul Dacier as CLO from Quinn Emanuel to replace Stacey Giamalis. In May last year US networking and cloud services business Lumen Technologies appointed former Motorola Solutions GC Mark Hacker as CLO, replacing interim legal chief Meredith Hayes, who returned to her role as deputy GC.

And in February last year, AI business Inflection AI hired Withers partner Doug Mandell as GC, a newly created role at the company.
