Firms urged to take on Mandarin speakers to advise Chinese investors

A wave of sophisticated Chinese investment in Australia is creating a need for advice to be given by Mandarin speakers. But there is currently a gap in the market, according to one local firm.

Eugene Chen is the head of the Australia-based China practice at Hall & Willcox. He runs a system in which Chinese clients are looked after in the firm by China practice partners, who then liaise with other practice areas within the firm to serve clients. Mr Chen said: 'In other firms, there are no senior Mandarin-speaking lawyers running China practices – that's a major deficiency.' 

Agribusiness

Since the global financial crisis, the kind of investors coming from China has become far more sophisticated. In Australia, for instance, there have been more investors in agribusiness and real estate in the last five years. Source: Lawyers Weekly
