The hire of Canada’s former prime minister comes in the form of a partnership between Dentons and Mr Harper’s self-launched consultancy firm, Harper & Associates Consulting. The company was registered in the immediate aftermath of Mr Harper’s defeat in the national polls last October, and became fully operational around a fortnight ago when the former leader resigned his seat in Canada’s federal parliament. Mr Harper will be based at Dentons’ office in Calgary and according to a statement from the law firm will advise clients on ‘market access, managing global geopolitical and economic risk, and how to maximize value in global markets.’
Political elites
Mr Harper is not the only former political heavyweight to find a new home at Dentons. Also among the firm’s Canadian ranks are former Liberal prime minister Jean Chrétien, former ambassador to the US Gary Doer, and Mr Harper’s own former industry minister James Moore. ‘I spent 10 years leading a G-7 country and building up, obviously, a range of experience, insights and networks,’ Mr Harper told the Wall Street Journal’s Law Blog. ‘We concluded fairly early on that a strategic affiliation [with Dentons] would make sense… It’s got an unprecedented global reach.’
