Hogan Lovells has joined a network of more than 15 firms that hope to shape the future of AI and legal technology.

The Global Legal Tech Alliance, whose other law firm members include Tilleke & Gibbins, Havel & Partners, Gercke Wollschläger, MLL Legal and Jiménez Peña Abogados, was formed last month.

Firms in the network will swap information and opinions on legaltech and share access to training, said Hogan Lovells, which is due to merge with Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft later this year.

The industry group is a sign of the growing importance of legaltech to law firms, driven by the boom in AI.

In 2023, Hogan Lovells created its own legaltech subsidiary ELTEMATE to build legal technology for clients and provide consulting. Such technology has included AI-powered software for drafting documents and a multi-lingual tracker of regulations.

Sebastian Lach, partner at Hogan Lovells and co-CEO of ELTEMATE, told Global Legal Post that the firm joined the network because it wanted to take an active role in how technology is developed and applied in legal practice, rather than “being a passive consumer of tools”.

He added: “By working with peer firms that are leaders in their markets, we can exchange practical experience on what actually works in legaltech and AI adoption… Having the opportunity to jointly discuss and build solutions will allow us to move more quickly from ideas to tools that deliver real efficiency gains and better outcomes for clients.”

The Global Legal Tech Alliance is the latest attempt by international law firms to develop legaltech standards and share tips.

One of the most prominent legaltech groups is the Chicago-based Standards Advancement for the Legal Industry Alliance (SALI Alliance) − a not-for-profit organisation set up in 2017 that is developing legal data standards for describing legal work. Its members include large law firms, in-house corporate legal teams and large technology companies.
