The company, which was originally set up by a group of intellectual property law firms, was bought by Leonard Green & Partners from private equity company Cinven which reportedly paid £950m for it five years ago. CPA managed more than two million patents for law firms and corporates and has around 10,000 clients globally as well as employing 2000 staff across the world. Based in Jersey, it has expanded in recent years and has invested in its technology. In 2015, it invested in Innography, which was founded in 2006 with the aim of bringing 'big data' analytics to the IP market. It gathers information on nearly 100 million worldwide patents with financial, litigation, market and business data, using advanced machine learning techniques to enhance data quality and provides visualisations for insights.
