Long hours are needed for career advancement, say 71pc of lawyers

Professor Janet Chan of the University of New South Wales has been researching the culture of long hours in law firms and has urged the sector to promote 'a practice ethos that does not regard working long hours as a badge of honour'.

Australian lawyers put in longer hours than any other group, including accountants, according to other research. Addressing the Australasian Legal Practice Management Summit this month, management consultant Dr Bob Murray suggested that a kind of ignorance lies behind the expectation of long hours.
