US networking and cloud services provider Lumen Technologies has promoted Jennifer Hodges to chief legal officer, replacing Mark Hacker who is retiring to pursue a vocation in the church.

Hodges was previously the company’s senior vice president of corporate governance, securities, transactions and litigation. She takes over Hacker’s legal, governance and regulatory responsibilities, while chief revenue officer Jeff Sharritts will take on Hacker’s public sector business responsibilities.

Hodges becomes Lumen’s third full-time CLO in three years, after Hacker replaced former Hulu general counsel Chad Ho in 2025, who departed less than a year into the role. Ho had replaced long-time CLO Stacey Goff, who left in 2024 after 26 years with the company.

Monroe, Louisiana-based Lumen provides networking, cloud and cybersecurity services to businesses.

Kate Johnson, CEO of Lumen Technologies, said: “I am excited to partner even more closely with Jennifer as she steps into the role of chief legal officer. She brings deep expertise, sound judgement and a strong understanding of our business and governance priorities, and she will be a tremendous asset as we continue to execute our strategy.”

Hodges joined Lumen in January from Liberty Global, where she was a managing director. She was previously assistant GC at DaVita Medical Group and before that spent five years at legacy firm McDermott Will & Emery, almost three of them as a partner.

Hacker, meanwhile, leaves the business after just a year. His previous role before joining Lumen was at Motorola, where he was GC until stepping down for personal reasons in 2023. He will remain on at the company until 15 May to support the transition.

Johnson added: “On behalf of the entire Lumen team, I want to thank Mark for his leadership, integrity and partnership during an important chapter in our company’s evolution. We are deeply grateful for his contributions and wish him the very best as he begins this next chapter in ministry.”

In other recent US tech moves, earlier in April computer chip giant Intel hired Aparna Bawa as CLO and chief people officer from video conferencing platform Zoom, replacing April Miller Boise who is set to depart in June.

And in March, US data centre and digital infrastructure services provider Synteq Digital hired Will Wang as its first GC from Goodwin Procter.
