Corporate counsel must proactively add value to the company as part of their job, according to  Nissan Canada general counsel Fernando Garcia. In an article for Canadian Lawyer he advocates strategies for in-house counsel to develop a strategic role. The first is producing a 'client service standards' document outlining what the company can expect from the legal department. Secondly he advises setting shared objectives with the business. He also says consulting business partners is key when assessing strategic objectives. He advises going beyond the numbers and being realistic about costs to gain credibility whilst also conducting a SWOT analysis on the legal team and department. Finally he advises looking for opportunities to make a big impact with technology the most likely to transform.
