Marriott Vacations Worldwide (MVW) has promoted Andrew Marcus to general counsel, replacing James Hunter who is retiring.
Marcus was previously MVW’s deputy GC. He brings extensive legal and vacation ownership industry-related experience to the role, as well as a deep understanding of Marriott’s business and strategic priorities. As GC, Marcus will oversee all legal matters for the company.
Orlando-based MVW is a timeshare and vacation ownership provider that was spun out of Marriott International in 2011. It offers vacation ownership at luxury hotel brands including Marriott, Sheraton, Westin, Ritz-Carlton, St Regis and Hyatt.
Marcus originally joined MVW in 2015 as associate GC before being promoted to deputy GC in 2018. Prior to his time at Marriott, he was principal at Aran Management, providing legal and consulting services to businesses in the hospitality, real estate and vacation ownership industries.
He also previously spent 12 years at legacy timeshare and vacation ownership business Tempus Resorts International as chief legal officer, adding the chief operating officer role to his remit for the final two years of his tenure before it was acquired by Diamond Resorts International.
Before working in-house, Marcus spent nine years working in private practice at BakerHostetler, two of them as partner.
Hunter, meanwhile, is set to retire on 1 April, staying on until then in an advisory role to support Marcus’s transition to GC. Hunter originally joined Marriott International as assistant GC back in 1994 before moving over to Marriott Vacation Club International in 2006 to lead its legal department. He also played a key role in the spin off of MVW, where he has been GC ever since.
Prior to joining Marriott, Hunter was an associate at Davis Graham & Stubbs and legacy firm Dow Lohnes.
Matt Avril, CEO of MVW, said: “On behalf of our board of directors and associates, I thank Jim for his long‑standing service and the contributions he has made to our company.”
In other recent hospitality-related in-house moves, earlier this month Radisson Americas-owner Choice Hotels promoted deputy GC Jeff Lobb to the legal head role, replacing Simone Wu who is also set to retire.
