McDermott Will & Schulte has promoted 74 lawyers to partner and 13 to counsel, marking the largest class in either of the newly merged firms’ histories.

The promotions follow the combination of McDermott Will & Emery with Schulte Roth & Zabel in August to form a 1,750-lawyer firm with revenues of nearly $3bn.

The cohort is more than 55% larger than last year’s partner promotions at their legacy firms, spanning 17 cities and five countries, with the US accounting for the majority of the promotions.

New York led the round with 32 partners elevated, followed by Chicago, Miami, Boston and Washington DC, among other offices. The New York promotions mirror both legacy firms’ previous promotion rounds prior to the merger.

There were also promotions across Western Europe, including France, Germany, Italy and the UK, the latter of which saw two promotions.

The firm’s transactions teams saw significant promotions, with 42 recognised, while litigation had 19 promotions. Regulatory and tax teams saw seven promotions each. There were five promotions in health and life sciences, three in employment and two each in IP and private clients.

“As our first promotion election post-merger, this class reflects the power of our newly combined platform,” said Harris Siskind, the firm’s global transactions head.

“Our enhanced resources are second to none, especially in private credit, regulatory and investment funds. We’re doubling down on the areas where clients need us most, with integrated teams that deliver unmatched value.”

The firm said that 27 female partners and counsel were promoted in this year’s round, making up 31% of the 87-strong total.

Legacy McDermott Will & Emery previously promoted 43 lawyers to partner and six to counsel in its January 2025 partner round, of which nearly half were women.

McDermott chair Ira Coleman said: “These new partners embody the bold thinking and client-focused leadership that power our culture. This group shows what’s possible when talent meets opportunity, and their growth is proof that McDermott is a true career accelerant.”

Aymen Mahmoud, McDermott’s London managing partner, thanked the two London partners promoted – regulatory partner Pilar Arzuaga and litigator James Dobias.

Mahmoud said: “A huge congratulations to Pilar and James on their well-earned promotions to the partnership. Both have built exceptional practices, driven by deep expertise and a relentless commitment to client service.”

He added: “Just as importantly, they’ve done it with integrity, warmth and a collaborative spirit that makes them the kind of colleagues you want beside you at all times. Their drive and motivation are matched by their generosity as team players, and we couldn’t be more proud of them or more excited about what they will undoubtedly go on to achieve.”

While only two partners were internally promoted in London, the firm’s London office has targeted experienced lateral hires and ambitious younger partners in recent months, starting with legendary dealmaker Graham White last year, and culminating in a series of largely transactional hires spanning mainstream corporate, finance and related sectors, including private equity.
