US non-profit Brighton Marine has promoted Brian Ewart as general counsel, replacing Adam Hellman who has taken on the chief operating officer role.
Ewart was previously deputy GC, having joined from TriWest Healthcare Allliance at the start of the year. As GC, he will provide strategic legal counsel and oversight in areas including regulatory compliance, risk management and contracting.
Boston-based Brighton Marine is a non-profit social enterprise that supports military veterans and military-connected families with healthcare, housing, case management and other support services.
Royse Cloud, CEO of Brighton Marine, said: “Brian has quickly become a trusted adviser and valued member of our leadership team. He brings a rare combination of legal expertise, operational understanding and deep mission commitment. Just as importantly, he understands that strong governance and thoughtful legal strategy are not ends in themselves – they are tools that help organisations create better outcomes for veterans, military-connected families and the communities they call home.”
Ewart spent more than a decade at TriWest as GC, having previously been legal counsel and director of contracts at Vestige Consulting. He started his legal career at New Jersey firm Fishbeyn & Briskin.
He said: “This organisation has built an integrated model that brings together healthcare, housing and supportive services to strengthen outcomes for veterans and military-connected families. I look forward to continuing to work alongside our leadership team, employees and partners as we advance that mission.”
Hellman, meanwhile, will now dedicate his time to the COO role full-time, having held both positions since last October. Hellman joined in July last year from UnitedHealth Group, where he was deputy GC. He was previously an associate at O’Melveny & Myers in Washington DC.
Speaking at the time of Hellman’s elevation to his dual COO role last year, Cloud said: “Adam Hellman brings a rare combination of strategic vision, legal acumen and operations discipline. As chief operating officer, he will lead innovation across our systems, committed to strengthening how Brighton Marine delivers measurable, mission-driven outcomes for the Veterans and military-connected families we serve.”
Earlier this month, US not-profit media giant Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) promoted Jill Patrone to the chief legal officer role, replacing Katherine Lauderdale.
