Money becomes more important reason why people choose the law

Money is not one of the top three reasons that law students give for choosing the subject in a poll at Northeastern University School of Law, but it has become more important, according to law professor William Henderson.

Law students: numbers falling

The top three reasons given by 800 participating graduates are having a satisfying career, helping individuals and improving society. Some of the research is conducted in focus groups. The aim to acquire transferable skills has become more important for more recent law grads, as has the goal of eventual financial security.

Cost of a degree

A change appears to have taken place since the 70s and 80s, when jobs were more plentiful in the law. Professor Henderson says that the growing cost of graduating has probably had an effect on the decision-making of students. Source: ABA
