Non-lawyers gain more power in law firms

Non-lawyers are increasingly being given roles within senior management within law firms - to the benefit of the practices, says an expert on professional services.

Speaking at the Legal Futures conference in London, George Bull - national chair of professional practices at business adviser Baker Tilly - said that law firms are showing a 'far greater preparedness' to regard non-lawyers as equals.

Downturn management

Mr Bull said that the skills needed by management teams going into a downturn are 'very different' to those needed to manage growth when coming out of that part of the cycle. Another speaker, Adrian Fawcett, an entrepreneur, said that non-lawyers - particularly those with skills in financial management and organisation - are even more valuable to law firms during a downturn.
