Private equity targets legal entrepreneurs

Private equity companies are on the hunt for legal innovation Leedsn

Investment in legal start-ups has escalated with around $458 million being distributed around a mixture of new legal companies last year and four deals completed since January. The main deals included a $200 million tender offer by private equity company Permira to buy out early investors in LegalZoom whilst its competitor RocketLawyer acquired a legal Q&A legal platform LawPivot for an undisclosed sum. 

Research and e-discovery

Judicata, which offers research tools akin to those offered by Thomson Reuters and Lexis Nexis, received $5.8 million last year whilst Lex Machina, an online patent research analytics platform also received $4.8 million last year. Others receiving funding included two e-discovery companies, Modus (10 million dollars)  and Cicayda (5.8 million dollars).  Meanwhile online document libarary DocStoc was purchased by Intuit.
