Racial discrimination widespread in Canada legal sector

Despite a marked growth in numbers of black and other minority lawyers, discrimination is still rife, according to a report from the Law Society of Upper Canada.

‘Overt discrimination and bias are a feature of daily life,’ conclude the authors of ‘Challenges Faced by Racialized Licensees’. They continue: ‘Racialization is a constant and persistent factor.’ This is despite the fact that 17% of lawyers and 28% of paralegals are not white. 

Lose clients

One lawyer said: ‘There are firms that believe if they hire black lawyers they will lose their clients.’ Source: The Toronto Star
