The Serious Fraud Office issued a statement to say it was 'investigating suspicions of corruption in the conduct of business by BAT, its subsidiaries and associated persons.'  BAT initially appointed law firms Linklaters and Slaughter and May to investigate the allegations of misconduct.

Whistleblower

The company would not confirm whether the investigation concerned allegations made by a BAT whistleblower who worked for the firm in Kenya.  BAT hired law firm Linklaters in February 2016 to conduct a 'full investigation' into the claims made by the whistleblower. The company later dropped Linklaters and appointed Slaughter and May as sole adviser on the case.
