Small number of lawyers set to thrive in 'winner-take-all' economy

The legal sector appears to be demonstrating a textbook example of the 'winner-take-all' economy, with smaller numbers of specialists doing well and the rest getting leaner returns, according to Professor Benjamin Barton.

Dr Barton argues there is a bright future ahead for those who understand and embrace the challenges Don Pablo

The issue is examined in Glass Half Full: The Decline and Rebirth of the Legal Profession, a book written by Tennessee University law professor Benjamin Barton. He writes that clients ’have continued to pay more for true “bet-the-company” transactional and litigation work. This is consistent with the winner-take-all economy: the most profitable firms and most in-demand lawyers get richer doing the truly specialised work and everyone else falls backward toward the pack.’
