Top US government lawyers join private practice

Three leading lawyers have left public service to take posts with Davis Polk, Skadden Arps and Jenner & Block - showing the demand for regulatory advice from clients.

Davis Polk and Wardwell has recruited Avi Gesser, deputy director of the Deepwater Horizon Task Force of the Justice Department's Criminal Division.  BP, Transocean and Halliburton were among the companies he investigated and prosecuted for their role in the 2010 oil spill, according to Reuters.  Meanwhile Boris Bershteyn - who between 2009 and 2013 held various senior legal posts at the White House and its Office of Management and Budget - is going back to his former firm, Skadden Arps. And Chicago-based practice Jenner & Block is welcoming to its New York office the prosecutor who was between 2008 and 2011 the inspector general on fraud in relation to the government's bailout programme for banks, the Troubled Asset Relief Programme, Neil Barofsky.
