UK fintech ClearBank has hired Angela Roberts as group general counsel, replacing chief governance and legal officer Philip House as the company’s top lawyer.
Roberts was most recently head of EMEA legal at Allspring Global Investments. At ClearBank she will lead the group’s legal and governance functions and support the organisation’s growth ambitions. She brings more than two decades of legal and regulatory expertise to the role, including serving as working group chair of the Financial Conduct Authority’s Financial Services Consumer Panel, which provides policy advice to the FCA.
London and Amsterdam-based ClearBank provides cloud-based clearing bank services.
Mark Fairless, ClearBank’s CEO, said: “Angela’s extensive expertise and her passion for building high-performing, values-driven teams are a perfect fit for ClearBank’s vision. I am delighted to welcome her to the group executive team.”
Roberts spent three-and-a-half years at Allspring before departing in April. She also had earlier spells at Wells Fargo (as managing counsel), at Prudential (as director of legal services), PineBridge Investments (as assistant GC for EMEA) and Federated Hermes (as associate director).
She started her legal career in private practice as a corporate associate at Goulston & Storrs in Boston.
Roberts said: “I am excited to join ClearBank at such a transformative time for the business. The evolving regulatory environment across the UK and Europe presents both challenges and opportunities for innovation, and I look forward to working with the leadership team to support ClearBank’s ambition and help drive its next phase of growth.”
House, meanwhile, has moved on to a senior advisory role with the business. He originally joined ClearBank in 2016, having previously been GC at payments business SafeNed.
In other recent in-house finance moves, in October US pensions and life insurance firm Equitable Holdings promoted Kurt Meyers to chief legal officer, while in September US mortgage giant Freddie Mac hired Matthew Abrusci as GC from Japanese bank MUFG, where he was GC for its Americas business.
Also in September, US asset manager Vanguard hired Natalie Lamarque from Principal Financial Group as its latest CLO, replacing Tonya Robinson after less than a year in the role.
