US online grocery delivery platform Weee! has appointed Devang Shah as general counsel, filling a position that has been vacant since 2022.
Shah joins from agri-tech business Pivot Bio, where he was also GC. He brings with him two decades of experience leading legal functions at public and private tech companies.
The company said Shah’s appointment reflects its “continued investment in executive talent as it strengthens its leadership team, builds scalable infrastructure and furthers its mission to make global groceries accessible and affordable for all”.
Fremont, California-based Weee! is America’s largest online Asian supermarket, specialising in grocery products from China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and Korea, among other countries.
Larry Liu, founder and CEO of Weee!, said: “Devang’s ability to navigate evolving legal landscapes while supporting innovation will be instrumental as we scale.”
Shah arrives after just over two years at Pivot Bio, having previously been GC at e-commerce platform Wish for more than five years. Prior to that he spent close to seven years at gaming platform Zynga, three-and-a-half of them as GC.
He also had in-house spells at UTStarcom (as associate GC), Longs Drugs (as senior corporate counsel) and Chiron (as corporate counsel), having started his career in private practice at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom.
Writing on LinkedIn, Shah said: “Very excited to join Weee! as general counsel and work alongside the amazing team already here. Weee! has built something truly special – a platform that serves communities that have been underserved by traditional grocery retail. The company’s commitment to community and cultural connection is exceptional, and I look forward to contributing to their next chapter of growth.”
Jeon, who was Weee!’s first GC, left in 2022 to join Walt Disney as assistant GC before later joining Becton Dickinson as assistant GC. Weee!’s chief people officer Judith Nelson helped lead the legal team in the intervening period.
In other recent retail moves, last month UK online grocery retailer Ocado Group rehired Britvic GC Mollie Stoker to head up its legal team; she was previously deputy GC at Ocado before leaving to join the soft drinks-maker in 2023.
Also in June, Starbucks said it was on the hunt for a new legal chief after the company said chief legal officer Brad Lerman would step down in the coming months once a successor has been hired.
Meanwhile in March, Domino’s Pizza – the world’s largest pizza chain – promoted Ryan Mulally to GC, replacing Kevin Morris, while in November last year, restaurant franchisor business Craveworthy Brands hired John Silvestri as its first GC.
