Cancer charity rejects law firm donation because of tobacco client

The Irish Cancer Society has said it will stop accepting money from a law firm because it is acting for the cigarette company Japan Tobacco.

A cancer charity has refused to accept a donation from a law firm representing a tobacco company Africa Studio

According to Legal Business, the charity explained that it is 'currently undertaking a review of professional service providers who may have a conflict with the Society's mission, which is to achieve a future without cancer'. Arthur Cox is currently advising Japan Tobacco in its campaign to fight the introduction of legislation which would bring in plain packaging for cigarettes. The charity added that because the law firm is now leading a legal action, 'which has the clear aim of preventing the enactment of this legislation, we will therefore now decline any offer of a corporate donation from Arthur Cox'. The firm has given €20,000 to the charity in each of the last two years. It has not responded to calls for a response. Source: Legal Business
