Dozens of law firms jostle over GM claims

Some 109 law suits have been initiated, involving 983 plaintiffs, in relation to the lethal faulty ignition problem at General Motors and the recall of 2.6m Chevrolet Cobalts and other vehicles.

Lawyers are competing for roles in General Motor's consolidated litigation Denise Kappa

Nearly 40 lawyers were in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York where Judge Jesse Furman was presiding over the consolidation and management of the cases. Many other lawyers from across the US were unable to be present and had made written applications.

Not a time for false modesty

Leading lawyers are making pitches to take on leading roles in the consolidated litigation. David Boies, of the 240-lawyer, New York-based Boies, Schiller & Flexner, said: ‘This is an important case, a high-profile case, and you need the very best lawyers. This is not a time for false modesty.’ And Steve Berman, managing partner of 42-lawyer, Seattle-based Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, who led cases against Toyota in 2010, said: ‘I spent two and a half years of my life dealing with the issues (in Toyota) that we’ll deal with here.’ Sources: CTV News and InAutoNews
