Sir Singh was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1930 and arrived in the United Kingdom in 1956. He immediately began studying to become a barrister, and was called to the Bar three years later in 1959. A devout Sikh, Sir Singh made history in 1979 when he became the first person from a black and minority ethnic (BAME) background and the first Sikh to ever be appointed to the UK judiciary. After initially sitting as a part-time recorder, Sir Singh became a full-time circuit judge in 1982 and spent most of his judicial career at the Southwark Crown Court in London before retiring in 2002. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for his charitable work and his service as a judge.
